In Defense of Beer Cans Everywhere

Happy Beer Can Appreciation Day, everyone! In honor of the holiday, we asked our Beer Buyer Zach what he thought of the whole cans vs. bottles debate. Turns out, there’s a lot more to it than people realize!

To dive a little deeper, here’s a few canned beers we have in store he thinks are worth noting. Let us know where you stand in the comments!

  • 1. Sierra Nevada Resilience Butte County Proud IPA ($8.49 for 6)

  • This can in particular is extra special to our Northern California community because 100% of the proceeds goes towards the Sierra nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund to help with the devastation that occurred during last year’s wildfires.

Zach notes that Sierra Nevada in general has a strong commitment to protecting the environment for generations to come. Besides the state-of-the-art technology they employ to make their beer more sustainably, a great benefit of cans over bottles is that they can easily be packed in / packed out for outdoor adventures.

  • 2. Dale’s Pale Ale ($7.99 for 6)

  • At the forefront of the canning craft beer movement in 2002 was Oskar Blue Brewery with Dale’s Pale Ale. Dubbed “The Original Craft Beer in a Can,” this is a classic, hopped-up pale ale you should get you hands on if you haven’t already. The brewery says, “If you’re looking for a fistful of flavor, look no further than this hopped-up trail ride,” and we definitely agree.

  • 3. Guinness Draught Stout ($7.49 for 4)

  • The wildest thing about the canned Guinness Draught Stout isn’t the beer but the little mechanism they put inside called a widget. The widget in the can releases nitrogen when opened so consumers all over the world can still get that classic, smooth Guinness texture and head. It’s hard to believe but definitely worth a try for the novelty.

  • 4. Modern Times Orderville ($10.99 for 4)

  • A San Diego based craft brewery, Modern Times makes many unique styles of beer and cans every one of them. From year-round classics to seasonal favorites, they have no hesitation in canning their creations and still reign as one of the fastest growing craft breweries in the country. Not only are they easier for consumption but shipping cans instead of glass is significantly cheaper, meaning they can pass on those savings to their customers.

    5. Henhouse Brewing Company IPA ($9.99 for 4)

A local favorite, Henhouse is quite nearly obsessive about the quality of their cans and we’re here for it. They have strict rules for retailers to follow to ensure the freshness of their beer, and if any cans don’t sell quickly enough they’ll take it back to the brewery and replace it with even fresher beer for the next customer.
